Captain Elder, who having been in the service for a significant amount of time, had finally arrived at the conclusion that it was time for him to leave the military. During every one of his 32 years of service with the Boston Fire Department, Captain Elder gave his whole and undivided attention to the work that he did for the department.
This was the case even after he was promoted to the rank of captain. During that time, he focused all of his attention on the department, and as a direct result of his tireless efforts, he was able to make major contributions to the department’s overall performance.
