Joan Hebb Obituary, Death – We are deeply saddened to share the news that Joan Areta Hebb, 91 years old and a resident of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, passed away. She passed away without a struggle on December 16, 2022, following a brief hospitalization during which her family was at her side. Many people knew and admired her for her thoughtfulness and compassion, her desire to prioritize the requirements of others before her own, and the delicious blueberry muffins she made. According to what the mother wrote in her journal, “The most rewarding part of my life was growing up in a family with love, being a housewife, enjoying friends, and most importantly, being a Mother to three sons.” Joan Calkin was born on June 14th, 1931 in Greenwich, Connecticut, to parents Jack and Edna (Miner) Calkin.
Joan went to school in Wolfville. Apple blossoms and the aroma of newly plowed fields were two of her favorite things. She worked as a legal secretary when she and her husband lived in Middleton, where her sons were raised. After moving to Bridgewater with her husband, she began working for the federal government as a Program Service Clerk, a position she held for the next 19 years. Joan had a deep appreciation for the natural world and spent a lot of time at Bachmans Beach, where she also enjoyed oil painting and photography. In addition to that, she was a highly brilliant pianist. Joan was an active participant in the Bridgewater United Church community. During her time there, she was an Elder, sung in the choir, and, more recently, served as the pianist for a unique men’s choir. Both Joan’s first husband William (Bill), whom she was married to for 61 years, and her second husband Hardy Ashley, whom she married when she was 85 years old, passed away before she did. If we didn’t include her Jodi, Lucy, Faith, Sophie, Kiyah, and Bella, the particular furry lovers in her life, she would be disappointed.
Son Peter (Sandra), Port Joli, Nova Scotia, along with their son Jason and great-granddaughters Anniemay, Izabella, and Everette; son Richard (Deanna), Fredericton, New Brunswick, along with sons Marc (Brenda), Mitchell (and their mother Selma), Alex (Keelyn); and son John (Linda), Barrie, Ontario, along with their son Chad (Angela) and grandsons Joshua, Lincoln, Ty, and The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to a very special angel and caregiver named Joan Campbell for the selfless amount of time that she spent with Mom. In addition, we would want to appreciate the outstanding care and understanding provided by Dr. Heather Robertson, as well as the wonderful attention given to mom by the nursing team on the third floor. Sweeny’s Funeral Home, located at 35 York Street in Bridgewater, will be hosting a visitation on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, from 6 to 8 o’clock in the evening.
